Like most children, Bethany was excited about Christmas. She started counting down the days until Christmas on December 1st. Finally, Christmas morning came, and Bethany ran downstairs to see what was under the tree. She checked all the presents, but there were none from Santa.
“Why aren’t there any presents from Santa?” Bethany asked her parents.
“We didn’t think you believed in Santa anymore, Sweetie. Trevor said he told you Santa wasn’t real,” Bethany’s mother replied.
“Trevor ruins everything,” Bethany said and ran to her room.
After a good bout of crying, Bethany got out a piece of notebook paper and wrote a letter to Santa. Then she got an envelope, stamped it, and put the letter in the mailbox.
When she came back inside, her father said, “I am sorry, Bethany. But look, you got an extra present from Mommy and me. That series of books you’ve been wanting.”
“Thank you, Daddy,” Bethany said, trying to smile.
“Come on, we have more presents to open,” her dad said.
A week later, there was a knock on Bethany’s door. Bethany opened the door and saw a short man in a suit.
“Is Bethany at home?” The man asked.
“I’m Bethany.”
“I am Vernon. I work in the claims department at Santa’s workshop. I understand you wrote a letter to Santa charging him with negligence.”
“What’s negligence?”
“You claimed Santa didn’t deliver presents to your house at Christmas.”
“That’s correct. He didn’t.”
“Our records indicate that you don’t believe in Santa. Only believers get gifts.”
“I do believe!” Bethany insisted.
“Two weeks ago, your brother Trevor said, ‘Santa isn’t real,’ and you replied, ‘I know that, stupid.’ Is this true?”
“Yes, but I was shocked and didn’t want him to see me cry. I didn’t really believe him.”
“I see. So you are confirming that you do, in fact, believe in Santa?”
“Of course I do. I wrote a letter to him, didn’t I?”
“Very well. I will be sure to update the database.”
“What does that mean?”
“I’ll let the big man tell you.”
Suddenly, a sleigh pulled by reindeer landed on Bethany’s front lawn. Sitting in the driver’s seat was Santa himself. He looked at Bethany and said, “See you next Christmas. Ho, ho, ho!”
Vernon got in the sleigh. Then, in a flash, they were gone.
Thanks for reading and responding. You make it fun.
