I have been writing on Substack for over five years, but writing is really a “side gig.” My first love and primary creative outlet is music.

I have played in several bands and at churches and camps since I was a teen. I currently play in an acoustic trio called American Garage Band, which plays covers and original music. We do the occasional live gig but mainly livestream once per week on TikTok, where we have built a following of 80K in under three years.

I also livestream and post videos on TikTok and YouTube, and I have original music on all the music services (Apple Music, Amazon Music, Spotify, etc.)

I occasionally write about music on Mark Starlin Writes!, but in my mind, mixing my music with my writing is too messy. My writing is messy enough: humor, fiction, poetry, essays, and even comics. It is sort of like mixing dancing and plumbing in one Substack. A few dancing plumbers might love it, but most readers won’t care about both.

So, I have created a separate Substack for my music called Mark Starlin Music! A name in keeping with the lameness of Mark Starlin Writes!

Now that I am retired, I want to spend more time on my own music. Mark Starlin Music! will be part of that process. I plan to write about every aspect of music. Some of it will only interest musicians, and some will interest anyone who loves music.

I may post about songwriting, being a musician, gear reviews, musical fiction, guitar instruction, song parodies, music software, and thoughts—you name it. If it has to do with music, I will probably write about it. I have lots of ideas.

I will also be posting videos and music. And I plan to livestream once I get a few followers.

One idea I am very excited about is a project I am calling Song Per Month. As the name suggests, I plan to release a new original song every month on Mark Starlin Music! starting in January 2026. Then release them as an album at the end of the year.
