50-Word Microfiction
Leonard Turns 93
Leonard stepped slowly and carefully. It wouldn’t do to take a tumble at his age. His flashlight showed the way to the lawn chair he set up earlier that day. Leonard sat and cut the light.
Looking up, he took in the stars. “It won’t be long, Elizabeth,” he whispered.

Family Traits
Bethany was raised on the plains of the African Savanna. She loved her life there, living out among the wildlife. But when she turned 18, Bethany felt she needed to experience other cultures. So Bethany left Africa for the sun-kissed beaches of Southern California. There she met people who were raised in the concrete jungles of Los Angeles. They couldn’t have been more different. She had a hard time fitting in.
Bethany’s mother always told her she could do anything if she believed in herself and kept trying. Bethany knew her mother was wise, so she listened to her advice. She kept trying, and gradually, she made friends. And a life for herself in California.
Andrew was a young man who took a quick liking to Bethany. Bethany liked Andrew also. Their friendship quickly grew into love. Eventually, she felt comfortable enough to tell him the truth about her past.
“Drew, I have never told anyone this before. You know I grew up in Africa. But what you don’t know is I was raised by elephants.”
Andrew laughed and said, “Right. You crack me up.”
“I’m serious.”
“Come on. You expect me to believe that you were raised by elephants?”
“I’ll prove it to you.”
Bethany walked over to the nearest tree and tried to push it over with her head.
It didn’t move.
Bethany couldn’t understand it. She had seen her mother do it many times.
It was then that Bethany realized the hard truth. You can’t do anything simply by believing in yourself and trying. Mother was wrong.
Andrew laughed again and said, “Come on. Let’s go get some ice cream.”
“I don’t understand it. It looked so easy back home,” Bethany stated.
“You’re such a goof. That’s what I love about you,” Andrew replied.
Bethany decided ice cream was enough for today.

"I was raised by elephants," she said with a matter-of-fact look. Norwegian Greys. Majestic animals. You never fail to amuse, Mark! Hilarious.
“Leonard Turns 93” is poignant, sad, and hope-filled. Well done, Mark!
