Today, Americans (the United States variety) celebrate the unimaginable nerve of our founding fathers who, with no army to speak of and no navy at all — yet feeling justified in their actions — declared independence from King George III and the British Empire. And in doing so, committed treason. Starting a revolution (and a war) that changed the world.
They weren’t perfect men (far from it.) They made mistakes as all men do and fought amongst each other like politicians always do. But they were visionary and managed — with military help from the French and financial rescue from the Dutch — to create a form of government that remains over two centuries later, despite frequent partisan political tampering and abuse of power. Long may it survive the flawed people who wield its power.
Happy Birthday, America.
And Washington willingly gave up power. That was a truly revolutionary act, previously unheard of.
One man's freedom is another's treason.
A fine tribute, Mark! Thank you. Ah, where are our statesmen now? Our Jeffersons, our Roosevelts? We sorely need them.
